Gonosz-kő, Scientific nature reserve in Rodna Mountains, Romania
Gonosz-kő is a protected scientific reserve in the Rodna Mountains covering approximately 409 hectares of limestone walls, alpine meadows, natural springs, and dense forests. The land spans multiple elevations and is crossed by mountain streams with bridges connecting different sections.
The Romanian government designated Gonosz-kő as a protected scientific reserve in 2000 through Law 5/2000. This designation integrated the area into the Rodna Mountains National Park framework.
The shepherds who work in these mountains have built simple stone and wooden shelters that are still visible throughout the reserve. These structures show how mountain communities adapted to the landscape and continue their traditional practices.
Access to the reserve is available from Borșa town by following marked hiking paths through various elevations. Walking is the primary way to explore the landscape and cross the mountain streams on established routes.
The reserve provides habitat for brown bears, red deer, and chamois alongside rare plant species such as Edelweiss and Alpine Rose. Few visitors realize how many large mammals depend on these mountain slopes for survival.
