Pietrosul Rodnei, Mountain summit in Maramures County, Romania.
Pietrosul Rodnei is a mountain summit in the Rodnei range in Maramureș County, rising 2303 meters above sea level. Its northern slopes feature three glacial cirques that descend approximately 1650 meters to the valley floor.
The first recorded ascent took place in August 1796 when Pál Kitaibel, Ádám Waldstein, and János Schütz reached the summit with local guides. This early climbing expedition helped establish scientific knowledge of the mountain region.
Local names differ between Romanian and Hungarian speakers, reflecting the region's mixed heritage. The Romanian name refers to the rocky nature of the summit, while Hungarian speakers use Nagy-Pietrosz for the same peak.
Two marked trails from the village of Borsa lead to the summit, with hikers needing approximately eight hours for the complete round trip covering about 17.5 kilometers. The warmer months provide the best conditions for visiting when the trails are fully accessible.
Three glacial cirques on the northern face set it apart from the grass-covered peaks typical of the surrounding Rodnei range. These ice-carved formations make it a geologically interesting destination for those who study mountain landscapes.
