Chorna Hora, Mountain summit in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine.
Chorna Hora rises to 2028 meters within the Ukrainian Carpathians and features diverse landscapes with beech forests on its slopes and open alpine meadows higher up. The terrain is marked by steep eastern faces and gentler western slopes with distinct vegetation zones.
The area became popular as a hiking destination in the late 19th century when the first marked trail was established in 1880. This route connected the mountain to neighboring peaks and opened it to visitors.
The name means Black Mountain and refers to the Hutsul people whose communities have long inhabited the surrounding valleys. They have maintained their traditional way of life connected to these highlands.
Multiple hiking trails lead to the summit from different starting points, with routes offering varying levels of difficulty. The best time to visit is from June through September when weather conditions are more stable.
The summit marks a natural boundary between two regions and divides the drainage basins of major river systems. One of the source streams of the Prut River originates on its eastern slope.
