Breskul, Mountain summit in Chornohora massif, Ukraine

Breskul is a dome-shaped peak in the Chornohora massif standing at 1911 meters, with steep northern slopes covered by rock fields and alpine meadows. The mountain's faces drop sharply and display a mix of rocky and grassy surfaces typical of high-altitude terrain.

A historical border post from the early 20th century still stands at the summit, marking the former boundary between Poland and Czechoslovakia. This structure recalls the political divisions that once shaped the region.

The name comes from the old Slavic word 'bresk' meaning dawn light, or from a Hutsul term describing its swollen appearance. This naming reflects how people living in the region observed and spoke about the mountain's distinctive form.

Two main hiking routes reach the summit, one from Mount Hoverla and another from Mount Pozhyzhevska, each taking about an hour to complete. Both paths require sturdy footwear and good stamina due to the uneven terrain and steep sections.

Between Breskul and Hoverla lies a glacial valley containing several mountain lakes and the source of the Prut River, Ukraine's highest mountain stream. This hidden area is often overlooked despite being a key water source for the landscape.
