Brebeneskul, Mountain summit in Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine
Brebeneskul is a mountain summit in the Ukrainian Carpathians rising to 2038 meters, making it the second highest peak in the country. The peak is accessible by several marked hiking trails that connect from different starting points and wind through the surrounding terrain.
The mountain formed through tectonic processes during the Alpine orogeny and is part of the older Carpathian structures. Its rock formations tell the story of mountain building that occurred over millions of years.
Shepherds have grazed livestock on these slopes for generations and still make cheese using traditional methods in small wooden structures. This way of life shapes the mountain landscape and shows how people have adapted to living in this high terrain.
The mountain is best visited between June and September when weather conditions are stable and snow has melted. Sturdy hiking boots and weather-resistant clothing are important since conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
Near the summit lies Lake Brebeneskul, an alpine lake with turquoise water and the highest of its kind in the country. The water retains its vivid color throughout the year and has become a symbol of this mountain region.
