Vârful Farcău - Lacul Vinderelu - Vârful Mihăilecu

This nature reserve in Maramureș is a mountainous area with two prominent peaks and glacial lakes tucked between mixed forests and open slopes. The landscape transitions from dense woodlands to alpine meadows and rocky terrain, with streams and water features marking the path between higher elevations.

The area received official protection status through legislation in 2000, recognizing its mountain ecosystem as nationally important. This designation reflected growing awareness of the ecological value of these Alpine zones within the Carpathian range.

Local communities in nearby villages continue pastoral traditions, with herds grazing on mountain meadows during warmer months in ways that have shaped the land for centuries. Access to the area is mainly on foot via hiking trails that connect the peaks and lakes; the best time to visit is from June to September when snow melts and paths are passable. Come prepared for changing mountain weather and bring sturdy footwear and navigation tools, as terrain can be steep and weather conditions shift quickly.

The reserve contains several cirque basins left behind by ancient glaciers, including formations like Groapa Julii and Groapa Lupilor that mark where ice once carved the rock. These geological features create cool microclimates that allow rare alpine plants to grow here at lower elevations than would normally be possible.
