Marmaros protected massif

The Marmaros protected massif is a nature reserve in the Carpathians at around 1540 meters elevation, featuring expansive beech forests and diverse mountain ecosystems. The landscape covers rugged mountainous terrain with dense forest coverage and numerous ridges throughout the protected area.

The area gained recognition as part of UNESCO World Heritage through the Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians conservation program. This designation acknowledged the importance of the natural forest formations spanning the region.

Scientists and researchers regularly conduct expeditions in the massif to document wildlife, contributing to the understanding of Ukrainian natural heritage.

Entering this area requires special permits from border officials due to its proximity to the Romanian border. Visitors must maintain regular location updates and follow local regulations throughout their stay.

The Yalynskii waterfall within the reserve forms the highest waterfall cascade in the Carpathian Mountains. This impressive geological formation remains difficult for hikers to reach and is often overlooked by visitors.
