Vitovnica Monastery

Vitovnica Monastery sits on the right bank of the Vitovnica River beneath a limestone ridge, where the Skop gorge opens to the valley below. The complex includes a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, residential quarters, and a bell tower.

A medieval Serbian ruler founded the monastery at the end of the 13th century following military campaigns in the region. The structures underwent significant reconstruction during the 1800s, adding and modifying several buildings.

The church features carved stone inscriptions from the 13th century that reflect the region's early connections with distant peoples. Visitors can see these historic marks preserved within the buildings today.

The site sits in a narrow gorge with steep surroundings, so arriving prepared with sturdy footwear helps. The compact layout makes it easy to see the main areas during a single visit.

A respected Orthodox spiritual teacher spent four decades here and his burial place remains in the courtyard. His presence shaped the community's modern history in a meaningful way.
