Vitovnica Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Petrovac, Serbia
The monastery stands on the right bank of Vitovnica River, at the exit of the Skop gorge beneath the 956-meter Stubik limestone rock formation.
King Stefan Milutin established the monastery between 1289 and 1291 after defeating Bulgarian rebels Drman and Kudelin who controlled the Branicevo region.
The monastery church features a stone tablet with inscriptions in Old Slavonic and Old Armenian languages dating from 1218, demonstrating the early cultural exchanges.
The monastery complex includes a church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dormitories, and a bell tower added during the 1856 reconstruction.
Elder Tadej, a Serbian Orthodox spiritual teacher, served as the monastery's abbot from 1962 to 2003, with his grave now in the monastery courtyard.
