Preševo Valley, River valley in southern Serbia
The Preševo Valley runs along the Preševska Moravica River from the town of Preševo down to where it meets the South Morava near Bujanovac. The terrain spreads across three municipalities with rolling slopes that frame the river landscape.
The valley shifted from Ottoman control to the Kingdom of Serbia in 1912 after the First Balkan War and became part of Serbian territory. This territorial change shaped its position as a border area between Central Serbia and North Macedonia.
Albanian communities call this valley home and maintain their own language and way of life in these towns and villages. You can experience these traditions as you move through the local settlements and see how people live day to day.
The valley serves as a natural transport route connecting Central Serbia to North Macedonia and forms part of the broader Morava-Vardar corridor. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring, with mild weather and good road access throughout the region.
In 2001 the valley saw armed conflict between Serbian security forces and Albanian groups, leading to international mediation and peace agreements. Today the region bears marks of reconciliation, even as those events remain in people's memories.
