Petnica Cave

Petnica Cave is an underground cavern near Valjevo featuring more than 600 meters of surveyed passages that connect different chambers with mineral deposits and interesting rock formations. The system divides into upper and lower sections, both filled with natural details and traces of human and animal presence.

Archaeological excavations in the 1960s revealed one of the oldest sites of human settlement in Serbia from the Neolithic period at this location. The finds show that people lived here about 6000 years ago and used this place over a long span of time.

The cave served as a shelter for both people and animals across thousands of years, as shown by the bones and tools left behind. Visitors can still see traces of these different inhabitants in the chambers today and understand how important this place was to life in the region.

For a visit, bring sturdy shoes with good grip and warm clothing since the cave remains cool underground. Guided tours with experienced guides explain the geology and history while you explore the different chambers.

The cave was once intensively studied by researchers and has preserved bones of extinct cave bears in its upper areas. These findings offer insight into the animal life that existed in this region thousands of years ago.
