Dno, Administrative town in Pskov Oblast, Russia
Dno is a town serving as an administrative center in Pskov Oblast, Russia, positioned near the Estonian border around 520 kilometers (323 miles) northwest of Moscow. The settlement sits at 230 feet (70 meters) above sea level and features main roads connecting residential districts from the Soviet era with a small historic core.
The settlement received official status in 1897 and developed as a railway junction during the late tsarist period. A military airfield was built here during World War II and changed hands between Soviet and German forces several times during the conflict.
The town name means bottom or ground in Russian, reflecting the flat terrain around it. Residents gather at the central square during local festivals and regional markets that showcase traditional food and craft from the Pskov region.
The town serves as a stop for travelers heading toward the Estonian border or other destinations in Pskov Oblast. The railway station connects it to larger cities in the region and provides access to local services in the town center.
An abandoned military airfield lies around 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of the town center and remains visible as a large clearing in the surrounding landscape. The runways have not been used since the 1980s and are now partly overgrown with vegetation.
