Tarusa

Tarusa sits on the left bank of the Oka, roughly 76 kilometers northeast of Kaluga and 140 kilometers south of Moscow. The settlement spreads across several hills sloping down to the river, with wooden houses and small museums scattered through residential streets.

In 1246, the settlement became the center of the Upper Oka Principalities under Prince Yury Mikhailovich. Later, the territory passed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow and lost its political standing.

Local ceramic workshops sell handmade pottery that visitors can take home as souvenirs. Along the river promenade, residents gather for walks and fishing.

The navigation season on the Oka runs from early June through mid-September, allowing visitors to take river trips. It is best to visit during good weather to explore the hills and waterfront.

A small museum preserves memories of the Tsvetayev family, Russian writers who lived here. The house displays furniture and personal items from the early 20th century.
