Nazran, Administrative center in Republic of Ingushetia, Russia
Nazran is a town in western Ingushetia at an elevation of 528 meters (1,732 feet). Residential neighborhoods, commercial zones and public squares spread across an area of roughly 241 square kilometers (93 square miles).
The settlement was founded in 1781 as a military outpost along the Nazranka River. It became a fortress in 1817 before receiving official town status in 1967.
The name comes from the Nazranka River, which flows through the town and shaped the original settlement. Local markets sell traditional North Caucasian baked goods and crafts that reflect the rural roots of the region.
The town sits on the M29 federal highway and the railway line between Rostov-on-Don and Baku, making it accessible from different directions. Public buses and shared taxis connect the residential areas with the center and neighboring towns.
From 1991 to 2000, the town served as the capital of Ingushetia. Government functions were then moved to the newly built town of Magas.
