Koryak Okrug, Administrative district in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia
Koryak Okrug is an administrative district in the northern Kamchatka Peninsula, spanning mountainous terrain and coastal communities. The region borders the Bering Sea and includes several small settlements with Palana serving as the administrative center.
The territory was established as an autonomous district in 1931 and maintained separate status until 2007. That year it merged with Kamchatka Oblast to form the present Kamchatka Krai.
The Koryak people, native to this region, shape daily life through reindeer herding and fishing practices that remain central to communities. These activities connect inhabitants to the land and sea in ways that visitors can observe throughout settlements.
Travel throughout the region relies heavily on air transport and seasonal maritime routes due to limited road connections. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather conditions and plan journeys carefully in advance.
The region experienced a major earthquake in 2006 and numerous aftershocks that revealed the area's geological activity. This seismic event shaped the landscape and remains part of the region's environmental story.
