Peter the Great Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Federal cultural heritage university in Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Peter the Great Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University is a research institution in northern Saint Petersburg with buildings dedicated to engineering, technology and applied sciences. The campus occupies a large territory with lecture halls, laboratories and dormitories set among green lawns and wide walkways connecting the different sections.
Count Sergei Witte established this institution in 1899 as a technical school to support Russia's growing industry. The institute expanded its faculties throughout the twentieth century and became a leading research center for engineering and natural sciences.
The university maintains educational connections with 520 international institutions and operates 40 research centers in collaboration with global technology corporations.
The university is accessible via several metro stations, with buildings spread across a campus that remains walkable. Visits to public areas are possible during term time, though some laboratories and libraries require prior permission to enter.
The hydro-aerodynamics laboratory preserves testing stands and water tanks from the tsarist period that remain in use for research today. Two Nobel Prize winners in physics studied here and shaped research directions that gained recognition far beyond Russia.
