The museum occupies a former merchant mansion and holds extensive collections of Russian and Western European art from the 16th through 20th centuries.
Founded in 1918, the museum initially displayed the collection of merchant A. Marayeva before expanding with items from the State Museum Fund and nationalized estates.
The museum displays 610 religious icons and artifacts, including rare manuscripts detailing the lives of prominent Old Believer religious figures.
The museum maintains 1501 square meters of permanent exhibition space and 135 square meters for temporary displays, with 28 curators managing the collections.
The Italian painting section represents the largest portion of Western European art, demonstrating various artistic movements from the 17th and 18th centuries.
