Serpukhov, Regional center in Moscow Oblast, Russia
Serpukhov is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, that spreads along both banks of the Nara River. The center preserves old stone buildings and church towers, while the eastern neighborhoods hold modern housing and factories.
Serpukhov was founded in 1339 as a frontier fortress to protect Moscow from southern attacks. The stone walls of the fortress were completed in 1556 and served for centuries to defend against raids.
The Church of the Intercession and Trinity Cathedral show the town's role as a center of Orthodox faith, where worshippers gather regularly. Monasteries attract pilgrims from other regions who come to attend religious festivals and services.
The town lies about 60 miles (100 kilometers) south of Moscow and is connected to the capital by a main road and a train line. Visitors reach the center after arrival using local buses or on foot from central stops.
The nearby Prioksko-Terraced Nature Reserve houses a breeding station for European bison, which helps save this endangered species from extinction. Researchers use the station to observe the behavior and health of the animals over the long term.
