Monument to the 10th NKVD Division in Volgograd, Military memorial in Chekistov Square, Volgograd, Russia.
The Monument to the 10th NKVD Division is a granite obelisk standing on Chekistov Square in Volgograd, in the Voroshilovsky District. It marks the line of defense held by this unit during the fighting for the city.
The monument was erected in 1947, a few years after the fighting of 1942 and 1943 in which the 10th NKVD Division held part of the city's defenses. It was part of a broader effort to mark sites of resistance across the Soviet Union after the war ended.
The name Chekistov Square refers directly to the Chekists, as members of the Soviet security service were called. Visitors today can read inscriptions on the stone that honor the fallen soldiers of the division, and the square remains a place where locals come to pay their respects.
The monument stands on a public square and can be visited at any time without restrictions. Walking around the square gives a clear view of the obelisk and the inscriptions on its base.
Of the soldiers who originally served in this division, only a very small fraction survived the fighting. Standing before the monument, visitors are looking at a site where nearly an entire unit was lost.
