Velikoye Lake

Velikoye Lake is a protected water body in the Meshchyera Lowlands surrounded by extensive reed and sedge beds along its shoreline. It sits within a pine forest setting that shapes the landscape and its ecological character.

The lake formed during the last glaciation period and once connected to Lake Beloye through a canal until authorities sealed the waterway in 2009. This change significantly altered the hydrological connections of the region.

Local fishing traditions shape how people interact with this water throughout the year, connecting residents to their environment through generations of practice. The lake remains a gathering place where these customs continue to define community life.

Visitors can fish in designated areas where pike and carp are commonly found in good numbers. Access is regulated through established paths to help protect the natural setting.
