Meshchyorsky National Park

Meshchyorsky National Park is a large protected area in the Meshchera Lowlands containing extensive wetlands, swamps, peat bogs, rivers, and lakes bordered by pine and birch forests. The park spans thousands of hectares and connects different habitats across the landscape.

The land was shaped millions of years ago during the ice age as an ancient river valley, then settled by people who lived there for millennia. The park was established in 1992 to preserve this distinctive landscape and its heritage.

The territory holds traces of ancient settlements scattered throughout, visible to visitors as earthen mounds and remnants along walking paths. These sites tell the story of people who lived here for centuries and shaped the land.

The area has marked hiking trails of varying difficulty and camping sites for nature-oriented visitors. Rivers and lakes allow for fishing and boating, though visitors should expect wet and muddy conditions depending on the season.

The area is part of an internationally protected wetland connecting two major rivers, providing habitat for a large number of rare plant species found nowhere else in many regions. This protected status helps preserve species that are difficult to find elsewhere.
