The House of City Primary Schools is a four-story building on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street that blends Art Nouveau and Russian Revival design elements. Its symmetrical facades feature varied arched windows and decorative ornaments throughout.
The building was constructed between 1911 and 1912 by architect Anatoly Ostrogradsky for Moscow city authorities as an educational facility. It became home to the Faculty of Medicine and Biology of Pirogov Medical University starting in 1963.
The central facade displays a large majolica panel showing Saint George defeating the Dragon, created by artists Sergei Gerasimov and Sergei Chehonin at the Abramtsevo factory. This decorative work remains a striking visual element that draws the eye of visitors passing by the building.
The building is located on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street in Khamovniki District and is easily accessible by metro. Since it now houses a university, visitors can view the exterior facades and the majolica panel without needing to enter the building.
The architectural design drew inspiration from temples in Novgorod and Pskov dating from the 12th to 15th centuries, with cross vault elements subtly integrated into the modern design. These historical references appear in the window details and structural features.
