Khamovniki District

Khamovniki is a residential district in central Moscow that curves along the Moskva River and contains parks, gardens, and major streets including Volkhonka Street. The area mixes older apartment buildings with newer construction and provides access to several cultural and educational facilities.

The district grew from a textile craft center beginning in the 16th century and was later absorbed into the expanding city. Industrial activity faded during the 20th century, but the district's layout and name still reflect this earlier purpose.

The district's name comes from textile workers who produced cloth here for centuries, and this heritage shapes how locals view their neighborhood. Though the factories are gone, the craft tradition remains part of the area's identity and character.

The district is well connected by red line metro stations from Kropotkinskaya to Vorobyovy Gory, offering quick access to other parts of the city. Visitors will find wide, level sidewalks and clear street layouts that are easy to navigate on foot.

The section between Boulevard Ring and Garden Ring, called the Golden Mile, contains some of Moscow's most expensive residential properties in the downtown area. This stretch reveals the stark contrasts in urban wealth distribution right next to the district's older, more modest apartment buildings.
