Vakhtangov Theatre, Academic theater in Arbat District, Moscow, Russia
The Vakhtangov is a playhouse in the Arbat District of Moscow with a large auditorium offering more than a thousand seats. The main stage presents both classic Russian dramas and new productions, while several smaller rooms serve for rehearsals and exhibitions.
Yevgeny Vakhtangov opened the stage in early 1921 and led it until his death the following year. The Soviet government granted the ensemble academic status in the mid-1950s, confirming its importance for the national theater scene.
This playhouse presents work rooted in the acting method developed by its founding director in the early twentieth century. Audiences see a mix of psychological realism and open theatricality that defines the stage's approach.
The building stands at 26 Arbat Street, close to several metro stations that ease access. Most performances begin in the evening, and tickets can be purchased in advance through the website to avoid long queues.
Architect Pavel Abrosimov designed the building in Empire style with columns and symmetrical facades. A small museum inside preserves costumes, posters and personal items from the ensemble's founding years.
