Gorky Park, Public park in Yakimanka District, Moscow, Russia.
Gorky Park is a recreational area in Yakimanka District along the Moskva River in central Moscow. The grounds include lawns, gardens, playgrounds and an ice rink, covering several hundred acres.
The site originally served as a city dump before being converted for the Agricultural Exhibition in 1923. Afterwards, the grounds became the first Soviet cultural park, opening in 1928.
The name comes from Maxim Gorky, whose work was closely tied to Soviet ideals. Today Muscovites come here to jog, cycle or simply walk, while the open-air stages regularly host concerts and film screenings.
Several metro stations, including Park Kultury, Vorobyovy Gory and Oktyabrskaya, are within walking distance. The grounds are large, so comfortable footwear is recommended for longer walks.
Local residents volunteered to build the facilities, helping meet the opening date in August 1928. Their work completed paths, benches and pavilions within a few months.
