Никольский собор, Orthodox temple in central Moscow, Russia
Saint Nicholas Cathedral was an Orthodox temple featuring neoclassical design with stone columns, porticos, and a dome topped by a small pavilion cupola. The building occupied a central location in Moscow and created an ordered, balanced appearance within the urban landscape.
The Nicholas Monastery's origins trace back to 1390, with historical records confirming the cathedral's existence during a major fire in 1564. The structure was demolished in 1935 when Soviet urban renewal policies removed central religious buildings from the city.
The cathedral served as the main church of the Nicholas Greek Monastery and contained burial sites of the Kantemir noble family.
The location where the cathedral once stood is situated in the city center and can be reached easily via main thoroughfares. Visitors can access the site at any time to observe the square and reflect on the historical importance of this former location.
The upper church was funded in 1735 by Prince Dmitry Kantemir and was dedicated to the Iverian Icon of the Mother of God. This expansion reflected how influential families demonstrated power through sponsoring religious construction in Moscow.
