Merchant Guild House, Vyborg

The Merchant Guild House is a stone building in Vyborg constructed from uncut granite boulders fitted tightly together. It sits at the corner where two streets meet, with the structure occupying this corner position to command attention in the city layout.

The building dates to the 14th century when it served as a trading center in an important Baltic city. It remains one of only four surviving medieval merchant houses preserved on Russian territory.

The building reflects medieval merchant life through its original layout designed for trading and storage activities. Visitors can observe how the spaces were arranged to serve the practical needs of commercial transactions and goods management.

The building now houses a visitor information center and is easily accessed as it sits in the city center. The corner location makes it simple to find, and visitors can examine the exterior construction and layout from the streets around it.

The ground level surrounding the building gradually rose over centuries, causing the original first floor to become buried underground. This unusual transformation reveals how the urban landscape shifted over time and reshaped the building's proportions.
