Yachenskoe Reservoir, reservoir in Russia
Yachenskoe Reservoir is an artificial lake in Kaluga, Russia, formed at the mouth of the Yachka River. It has a sandy beach area, a boat pier, and facilities for activities such as wakeboarding, SUP boarding, and boating.
The reservoir was built in 1980 by damming the Yachka River, mainly to support water sports events in the region. After it was completed, sporting and recreational facilities gradually developed around its shores.
Locals call it the Kaluga Sea, a nickname that reflects how central this water body is to everyday life in the city. Along the shore, families, athletes and casual walkers share the same waterfront throughout the warmer months.
The area can be reached from several entry points, with parking, a beach and a boat pier all close together. Beginner lessons with on-site instructors are available, so no prior experience with water sports is needed.
In winter, the surface freezes over and fishermen drill holes in the ice while cyclists ride across it. The same water that carries motorboats in summer becomes a flat, open space used in a completely different way just a few months later.
