Удельный рынок, Traditional marketplace on Fermskoe shosse, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Udelny Market is a large open-air and covered marketplace in the Udelnaya district in the north of Saint Petersburg. It is divided into indoor sections for meat and dairy and outdoor rows for vegetables, fruit, clothing, and household goods.
The market grew in the early 20th century as a trading point between farmers from the surrounding countryside and residents of Saint Petersburg. Through the Soviet period it became one of the largest collective farm markets in the city.
Many regular shoppers return to the same vendors week after week, buying goods that are hard to find in standard supermarkets. Stalls selling homemade pickles, honey, and dried herbs run by private individuals give the place a distinctly local character.
The market is best visited early in the morning when the selection is at its fullest, especially on weekends. The covered halls are more comfortable in cold or wet weather, while the outdoor rows offer more space and variety.
Along the edges of the main market area, informal spots have developed over the years where private individuals sell secondhand objects, Soviet-era items, and old books. These sections are not always easy to spot but reward visitors who take time to wander off the main paths.
