Нижне-Гниловское городище

Nижne-Gnilovskoe is an archaeological site featuring a hilltop with two peaks at the western edge of Rostov-on-Don. The terrain spans a large area and shows the layout of a significant ancient settlement.

The site was inhabited by Scythian peoples and others during the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE, as shown by graves and artifacts. Later communities also settled here and left their own marks on the landscape.

The name refers to the ancient settlement that took root in this location. Today, visitors walking through the site can sense how communities were organized across different periods.

The site sits at the edge of residential neighborhoods and is accessible from several streets nearby. Visitors should know that large portions are reserved for future excavation work.

This settlement belongs to a group of six ancient sites together known as Hexapolis. This rare cluster reveals a complex network of communities that shared the river region.
