Azov Fortress, Military fortress in Azov, Russia.
The fortress overlooks the Don River with stone walls, eleven watchtowers, and defensive ramparts extending across its strategic position near the Sea of Azov.
The Ottoman Empire constructed this military stronghold in 1475 to protect northern territories and maintain control over maritime trade routes between Europe and Asia.
The fortification complex includes the Powder Cellar Museum from 1799, which displays military artifacts and architectural elements from the time of Catherine the Great.
The fortress maintains regular visiting hours throughout the year and contains informative panels explaining the military engineering techniques used during its construction.
The structure features an extensive network of underground passages and storage facilities that were used for supplies during numerous sieges across three centuries.
