Alekseevsky Gate, Military gate in Azov, Russia.
The Alekseevsky Gate is a military gate in Azov that once formed part of the fortress complex protecting the city. Its vaulted tunnel passage was built from stone and brick, creating a strong and functional entryway to the fortified area.
The fortification was built following Peter the Great's military campaigns against Azov starting in 1696. The gate itself was reconstructed from wooden materials into stone and brick construction between 1801 and 1805.
The gate reflects how Russian military builders of the 18th century adapted European fortress design to local needs and materials. It shows the blend of Russian construction methods with influences from outside the country.
The gate can be reached on foot and is located within the former fortress grounds in the city center. Access is straightforward, and visitors can see it from multiple angles as they walk around the area.
Archaeological digs in the 1930s uncovered two parallel stone walls beneath the current structure. This discovery helped experts understand the original design and later restore the gate to match its historical form.
