Rostov Oblast, Administrative division in southern Russia.
Rostov Oblast is an administrative region in southern Russia that stretches along the lower Don River toward the Sea of Azov. The territory includes wide steppe landscapes, agricultural land, and several cities, with Rostov-on-Don serving as the administrative and economic center.
The oblast was created in September 1937 from the dissolved Azov-Black Sea region. During World War II, the area was under German occupation from 1941 to 1943 and suffered heavy destruction.
The territory maintains eight professional theaters, multiple museums, and religious structures, with Russian Orthodox Christianity representing the primary faith of the population.
Rostov-on-Don serves as the main transport hub, connecting the region with other parts of southern Russia through roads, railways, and the airport. The best time to visit is between May and September when the continental climate brings milder temperatures.
The region borders Ukraine and forms an important transit route for trade between Eastern Europe and the Caucasus. In rural areas, you can still find traditional Cossack settlements that recall the historical presence of this community.
