Toilet on Gazetny, Public restroom on Gazetniy Lane, Rostov-on-Don, Russia
The Toilet on Gazetny is an underground two-level restroom facility located in the basement of building number 46 at the intersection of Gazetniy Lane and Bolshaya Sadovaya Street. It sits in the heart of downtown Rostov-on-Don and serves as a central public facility in this area.
In the early 1900s, this location functioned as a poets' café where artists gathered. During occupation, it was repurposed as a casino before being converted into a public restroom facility in April 1945.
The venue hosted the first performance of poet Velimir Khlebnikov in August 1920 and later presented his play 'The Death's Mistake'.
The facility operates continuously around the clock, making it accessible at any time of day or night. It serves as an essential service point in the downtown area for residents and visitors alike.
In 1988, the space briefly hosted the Provincial Avant-garde exhibition, showcasing works from the Rostov art association. This temporary art venue later returned to its role as a public facility.
