Building of revenue house of Karapet M. Chernov

The revenue house of Karapet M. Chernov is a five-story building on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street with Corinthian and Ionic twin pilasters across its facade. Ornate garlands, lion masks, and cast-iron railings decorate the small fifth-floor balconies.

Merchant Karapet M. Chernov built the structure in 1890 as a three-story building, which was later expanded to five floors. The additional stories were added to meet growing demand for housing and commercial space in Rostov-on-Don.

The building shows how wealthy merchants of the 1800s expressed their power through grand facades with decorative details. The ornate lion masks and columns reflect the ambition that drove such displays during this period in the city.

The building stands at the corner of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street and Voroshilovsky Prospekt in the city center. The original architectural details remain visible and well maintained on the exterior.

A rival merchant built a competing revenue house directly across the street, sparking an architectural competition. This mutual escalation of decorative grandeur reflects the business rivalries that shaped the city's development.
