Novocherkassk Cathedral

Novocherkassk Cathedral is an Orthodox house of worship featuring Neo-Byzantine design that rises 74.7 meters high and contains nine bells weighing 33 tons combined. The structure measures roughly 72 meters long and 58 meters wide, with enough space to hold around 5,000 worshippers at once.

Construction began after two earlier failed attempts in 1846 and 1863, when architect Alexander Yashchenko designed a third version that was completed between 1891 and 1904. This lengthy building process reflected the cathedral's importance as the Don Cossacks established their main religious and cultural center.

This cathedral serves as the spiritual heart of the Don Cossack community and shapes local religious practices to this day. The imported marble floors from Italy and France that line the interior reflect the region's historic prosperity and connections.

Plan to spend considerable time exploring the spacious interior, especially if visiting during religious services when the building is filled with worshippers. Dress respectfully and allow extra time to observe the intricate details throughout the structure.

The main cross atop the cathedral features inlays of rock crystal that catch the light in unexpected ways. The interior walls display an unusual combination of golden, burgundy, blue, and green decorative patterns rarely seen together in Russian Orthodox sacred spaces.
