Novocherkassk

Novocherkassk is a settlement in Rostov Oblast, Russia, serving as a military and industrial center. The town lies at the confluence of the Tuzlov and Aksay rivers and features wide avenues and boulevards laid out according to European urban planning principles.

Lieutenant General Matvei Platov founded the settlement in 1805 after Tsar Alexander I authorized the relocation of the administrative center from Cherkassk. In 1962 the town experienced a massacre when Soviet Army soldiers responded to civilian protests against food shortages.

The Museum of History of Don Cossacks displays objects and documents about traditions and heritage of the regional Cossack community. Visitors can view exhibits that offer insights into the way of life of this population group.

The streets are laid out in a wide pattern, making orientation within the settlement easier. Visitors can walk through the center to reach main points of interest.

The Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant manufactures industrial equipment, including mining machinery, machine tools, and materials for synthetic fiber production. The facility ranks among the largest production sites of this type in the region.
