St. George's Church, Novocherkassk, Orthodox church in Novocherkassk, Russia
St. George's Church in Novocherkassk is an Orthodox house of worship built from red brick that stands near the Tuzlov River and features a distinctive bell-gable instead of a traditional high tower. The building accommodates around 400 people and continues to serve as an active center for Orthodox worship today.
Construction began in April 1897 and finished in October 1898 as a memorial to the narrow escape of Tsar Alexander III from a railway accident. This significant national event inspired the creation of this house of worship in honor of survival.
The interior holds an unusual artistic approach, combining academic religious paintings with a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper within a miniature wall iconostasis. This blend of Western artistic influence with Orthodox tradition reflects how the church merged different visual styles.
When visiting, keep in mind that this is an active place of worship, so proper conduct and respectful dress are important during your time inside. If you arrive during services, you will experience the space in its fullest and most authentic setting.
In October 2000, the church received a sacred icon known as 'It is Truly Meet' from a collection of myrrh-streaming icons from Mount Athos. This addition connected the church to one of the oldest traditions of Orthodox spiritual practice from Greece.
