Rostov Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Rostov Oblast, Russia
Rostov Nature Reserve is a protected area in Orlovsky District, divided into four separate plots along the Manych River lowlands. The sections lie within steppe grasslands and riverbanks, where grasses, reed beds, and open water alternate.
Federal authorities created the reserve at the end of December 1995 to protect steppe and wetland habitats. Twelve years later it gained biosphere status, marking its international importance for species conservation.
The name reflects its location within a depression that separates two major geographic regions, creating a transition zone of grassland and wetland. Visitors today see this mix of habitats in action, with waterfowl nesting near the river and dry steppe stretching inland across the sections.
Visits require advance booking, and groups should number between six and ten people. Marked trails lead through designated zones where rangers supervise contact with wildlife and plants.
Vodny Island hosts around 150 wild horses that roam freely in fifteen family bands. These mustangs use the entire island and offer a rare example of feral horse populations living in Europe.
