Azov History, Archaeology and Paleontology Museum-Reserve, Regional history museum in Azov, Russia.
The Azov History, Archaeology and Paleontology Museum-Reserve is a regional museum in Azov, Russia, housed in a building on Moskovskaya Street. It holds a wide-ranging collection of finds from ancient settlements, burial grounds, and geological layers across the region.
The museum was founded in 1917, when residents of the town began gathering objects related to local history. It suffered damage during the conflicts of the 1920s and 1940s, but reopened in the 1960s with its collections preserved.
The collection brings together objects from nomadic peoples who passed through this steppe region over many centuries, including weapons, jewelry, and everyday items. These finds give a direct sense of how those communities traded and organized their daily lives.
The main entrance is on Moskovskaya Street in central Azov, making it easy to reach on foot from most of the town. Plan for at least half a day to move through the exhibition halls without rushing.
A complete mammoth skeleton assembled from bones found in the surrounding area stands as the centerpiece of the paleontology section. The restoration of this specimen took nearly two decades before it was ready to be put on display.
