Шара-Нур, Protected lake in Olkhon Island, Russia
Shara-Nur is a saltwater lake located on Olkhon Island at approximately 750 meters elevation, measuring roughly 360 meters long and 200 meters wide. The waters contain therapeutic mud and minerals that have been used for healing purposes, while the surrounding meadows support diverse plant life.
The lake has been valued by local Buryat communities for its therapeutic properties since ancient times. Its designation as a protected site came later to preserve both the natural environment and the cultural traditions associated with it.
Local legends describe a mystical serpent dwelling beneath the surface, reflecting the spiritual connection between the Buryat people and this body of water. The name itself comes from the Buryat language and carries meaning rooted in the surrounding landscape.
The lake is most accessible during warmer months when water temperatures make swimming comfortable and the surrounding areas are easier to traverse. Visitors should expect mineral-rich waters and wear appropriate footwear for the meadow terrain.
Hydrogen sulfide bubbles rise from the lake floor, creating a distinctive visual effect that fascinated locals for generations. Endangered duck species nest along the shores among thyme and reed beds, making the site important for wildlife conservation.
