Mansion of Yakovlevs, Classical mansion at Fontanka River embankment, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The Mansion of Yakovlevs is a three-story green building with classical proportions located along the Fontanka River embankment. Its river-facing side features eight columns supporting a grand entrance, while the interior is organized around a circular rotunda with a cast iron spiral staircase.
The building was constructed between 1780 and 1790 under architect Georgy Wintergalter's design. A significant renovation in the mid-1800s updated the structure while maintaining its classical character and proportions.
The central courtyard space became a gathering place for the city's musicians and artists during the 1970s. Local bands and performers would meet here for creative exchanges and informal cultural events.
The building sits at the corner of Gorokhovaya Street and the Fontanka River embankment, within walking distance of Sennaya Ploshchad metro station. The river-facing elevation is easily visible from the embankment walk, making it accessible for visitors to view its classical proportions.
The cast iron spiral staircase twisting through the rotunda creates a visual trick due to its curved geometry. The way the steps climb around the circular walls produces an illusion that can disorient visitors as they ascend.
