Bridge over the Ship Fairway, Cable-stayed bridge in Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Bridge over the Ship Fairway is a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Petrovsky waterway in the western part of Saint Petersburg. It runs about 2,040 feet (622 m) long and 128 feet (39 m) wide, with several main spans, and carries traffic along the Western High-Speed Diameter road corridor.
The bridge opened in 2016 as part of the construction of the Western High-Speed Diameter, a new urban expressway built away from the historic city center. The project was designed to route traffic around the congested parts of Saint Petersburg rather than through them.
The bridge crosses a stretch of water where cargo ships still move regularly, and drivers passing over it can watch vessels sailing beneath them. This kind of scene is common in Saint Petersburg, where waterways cut through the city and bridges are part of everyday life.
The bridge sits in the western part of the city and is easiest to reach by car, since it forms part of a high-speed road. Pedestrians and cyclists can also use it, but it is worth checking the access points in advance, as the surrounding area is built around motor traffic.
Unlike many older bridges in Saint Petersburg, this one does not need to open at night to let ships through, because its main span is already high enough for large vessels. This makes it one of the few crossings in the city that stays in place around the clock without interruption.
