Спас-Угол

Spas-Ugol estate is a rural property featuring a church constructed in 1795, with a refectory and bell tower added during the first half of the 19th century. The compound displays the architectural style typical of noble estates from that period, with several structures arranged across the grounds.

The estate belonged to the Saltykov family until 1918, when it was confiscated following the October Revolution and burned down the following year. Portions of the site were eventually rebuilt, allowing parts of it to survive to the present day.

Writer Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin was born here in 1826 and later portrayed his childhood memories in his final novel 'Poshekhonskaya Starina', giving the estate literary significance. The place remains connected to his depiction of rural Russian life and family traditions of that era.

The site is best visited during daylight hours when the architecture and surrounding landscape are clearly visible. A museum dedicated to Saltykov-Shchedrin occupies a modern building on the grounds and provides context about the estate's history and significance.

In August 1887, renowned scientist Dmitri Mendeleev landed in a hot air balloon near the estate while conducting solar eclipse observations. The event unexpectedly connects this rural location to a notable moment in scientific history.
