Skanör Church

Skanör Church is a medieval building with a Romanesque nave and Gothic windows that reflect the architecture of its era. It features a bell tower with crow-stepped gables, a cemetery, and inside stands a Renaissance altar alongside a stone baptismal font from the Middle Ages.

The church was founded in the 13th century and expanded during the herring trade boom when the Hanseatic League operated a major market nearby. The wealth from this trading center allowed for renovations and improvements to the building across the following centuries.

The interior walls display Renaissance paintwork created by local artisans, showing how artistic styles evolved over centuries. Visitors can trace this progression through the decorative schemes that cover different parts of the building.

The building is easy to explore from the outside, and visitors can walk through the cemetery surrounding it. For those wanting to see the interior, it works best to come during regular service times or by arranging ahead with the parish office.

The building contains a medieval crypt, a rare feature found in only a handful of other churches in this region. This underground chamber is a remnant from an era when such structures were built for people of importance.
