Sociala huset, Neo-romantic architectural structure at Grönsakstorget, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Sociala Huset is a red brick building with a half-elliptical shape spanning three stories at Grönsakstorget. The structure sits on a former bastion site near the Vallgraven canal and was adapted for educational facilities after major renovations completed in 2006.
Architect Victor von Gegerfelt designed the building in 1849 as the General and Sahlgrenska Hospital. It operated as a medical facility until 1900, when it was eventually transformed into a social services center.
The building's name reflects its current role as a hub for social services and community functions in the city. Its red brick presence shapes how the neighborhood looks and shows how older structures adapt to serve new purposes for residents.
The building now houses educational facilities and is maintained by the municipal company Higab. Visitors can view the exterior form and neo-romantic architecture from the square, particularly from Grönsakstorget.
The original elliptical design was more expansive in planning, but budget constraints during construction meant only half of it was actually built. This compromise shaped the unusual half-elliptical appearance that still defines the building today.
