Kungsparken, Urban park in Göteborg, Sweden

Kungsparken is a 13-hectare park behind Stora Teatern at Avenyn in Gothenburg, forming a park belt that wraps around most of Nya Allén. It was laid out in stages between 1839 and 1861. Within the park lies Floras kulle, on the site of a former ravelin of the city fortifications, with Ivar Johnsson's statue Flickan och sjötrollen. Other sculptures include Ägget by Egon Möller-Nielsen and Betongskulptur med sittbänk by Pontus Johansson near Vasaplatsen.

Kungsparken was originally called Kungsportsparken and was laid out in stages between 1839 and 1861. It forms a park belt around most of Nya Allén, together with Bältespännarparken (1863) and Trädgårdsföreningen (1842). Floras kulle occupies the site of a former ravelin of Gothenburg's fortifications.

The park was originally called Kungsportsparken, after the old city gate, and forms part of a green belt around Nya Allén with Bältespännarparken and Trädgårdsföreningen. In the 1940s and 1950s it was a meeting place for the city's homosexual men.

Kungsparken covers 13 hectares and wraps around most of Nya Allén, so it can be entered from several sides, including near Stora Teatern on Avenyn and by Vasaplatsen. Floras kulle, built on a former ravelin of the city fortifications, is the raised point to look for. The grounds are open to walkers year-round.

Floras kulle, a mound inside the park, was originally one of the ravelins of fortified Gothenburg; it now carries Ivar Johnsson's statue Flickan och sjötrollen. Near Vasaplatsen stand Egon Möller-Nielsen's Ägget and Pontus Johansson's Betongskulptur med sittbänk.
