Stäket redutt, Military fortification in Nacka Municipality, Sweden
Stäket redutt is an earthen fortification on the southern side of Baggenstäket with walls ranging from 4 to 8 meters in height and measuring roughly 65 by 50 meters in size. The structure was designed to allow defenders to fire from multiple directions simultaneously.
The fortification was built between 1719 and 1743 under the direction of Baltzar von Dahlheim as part of Sweden's coastal defense system. During the Finnish War from 1808 to 1809, the structure received its final configuration.
The fortification remains now occupy the grounds of Skogsö Cemetery near Skogsö Chapel, where Swedish defensive heritage is preserved alongside burial traditions. This integration shows how military structures from centuries past have become part of the everyday landscape.
The site is accessible by public transportation from central Stockholm and sits on cemetery grounds, so visiting should be done respectfully. Spring and summer offer the clearest views of the remaining earthen walls.
The diamond-shaped design allowed defenders to control the entire Baggenstäket strait and fire in all cardinal directions. This layout was typical of early modern coastal defense works in northern Europe.
