Gasklockan, Architectural project in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, Stockholm, Sweden
Gasklockan is a modern residential tower in Norra Djurgårdsstaden featuring a circular form, 28 floors, and a faceted facade that rises to 90 meters. The building houses 317 apartments with V-shaped floor plans that maximize natural light and provide varied views of Stockholm through carefully positioned windows.
This structure replaces a 1930s sheet-metal gasholder that once supplied energy to Stockholm before the city gradually moved away from gas heating. The new building rose on a site with industrial roots that has transformed into a modern residential neighborhood.
The ground level hosts exhibition spaces and public areas that link the residential tower to the surrounding district, encouraging interaction between visitors and residents.
The building is easily accessible with visitor entry to ground-level exhibition spaces that host art shows and cultural events. The location is well served by public transport, and the adjacent park provides a pleasant area for walking and relaxation.
The landscape design surrounding the tower was created by Piet Oudolf and features a public park of wildflowers that display different colors across the seasons. This green space ties the modern architecture to a living environment that continuously shifts in appearance.
