Bruno Mathssons sommarhus

Bruno Mathsson's summer home is an L-shaped modernist building with continuous glass walls and a sun courtyard wrapped by yellow corrugated plastic panels. The interior uses South American pine while the roof consists of light-transmitting plastic waves set into metal gutters.

The furniture designer built this residential experiment in 1960 as a testing ground for new architectural ideas. The project marked a turning point in Swedish residential design by demonstrating how materials and forms could be used differently.

The house shows how Mathsson rethought residential living by merging interior and exterior spaces seamlessly. His approach reflects a Scandinavian view where nature and comfort share equal importance in daily life.

Access flows through a minimalist layout with living room, study, bedroom, and two guest rooms tightly connected to one another. The floor-based hot water heating system is integrated into the structure and shapes how the spaces feel.

The roof uses a transparent plastic wave that distributes daylight evenly across all rooms while reducing heat loss. This approach was experimental at the time and shows Mathsson's understanding of resource efficiency in residential life.
