National Park Åsnen, National park on Lake Åsnen, Småland, Sweden
National Park Åsnen is a protected area centered on a lake in Småland with roughly a thousand islands scattered across its waters. The landscape combines deciduous forests, mixed woodlands, and wide marshland areas spread throughout the region.
This area was designated as Sweden's 30th national park in April 2018, protecting land that spans across two municipalities. The creation marked an important moment for safeguarding this forest and lake landscape.
The oak woodlands here reflect how local people have managed the forest for generations through traditional practices. Walking through, you can see how this long relationship between people and land shaped what you find today.
The park has four parking areas from which hiking paths depart, with the visitor center at Sunnabron offering a natural starting point. The easiest time to explore is from May through October when trails are most accessible.
The lake waters are home to around twenty fish species, including the rare gudgeon that few visitors know about. These waters and islands support over one hundred protected animal and plant species throughout the ecosystem.
